The YCSF was established in 2006 with its primary focus being the upliftment of the local community through education. The foundation will assist children from underprivileged homes, who cannot afford school fees, to receive an education which will enable them to create a brighter future for themselves.
Working together with Witkoppen Primary School and Mr. Makama, we have selected children from underprivileged homes who cannot afford to pay the school fees of R300 per year. Our goal is to sponsor a child for
a year. The funds collected by the foundation will not only assist financially disadvantaged children and families but also enable the school and the committed staff members to provide the much needed resources for educating their pupils. Mr. Makama has
been Headmaster since 1987 and continues to strive for a quality education with limited funds.
In 1943 Witkoppen Primary School was established as a farm school. Situated in rural
North Johannesburg the school has now grown to 600 pupils. Some classes have as
many as 70 learners at a time. There is one toilet that all these children have to use.
Most of the children are from neighboring squatter camps and are unable to pay their
school fees. Some children have to leave home at 4:30 to walk 15 kilometers to get to
school on time, and they are very rarely absent. A large percentage of the parents are
illiterate and are unemployed and have no prospects of employment. Many children
have been orphaned and raised by grandparents or older siblings. Without the much needed funds for school fees, these children may never have the chance for a better life.
